The eighth annual Lone Star Kicking Challenge, the premier competition event for Texas high school kickers will return to San Marcos this summer Competition will be held on Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Bobcat Stadium on the campus of Texas State University.
The popular competition event, founded and directed by former University of Texas Kicking Coach Randy Rodgers, has attracted over 900 high school kickers/punters, and snappers over it first seven years. The alumni list includes Green Bay Packer kicker Mason Crosby (Colorado) as well as current college kickers like Justin Brantley (TX A&M), Garrett Hartley (Oklahoma), Kyle Tucker (Kansas), and Jason Ricks (Oklahoma State). Last years overall winner, Ryan Doerr of Katy signed a scholarship to the University of South Carolina. Many of these same college kickers return each year to assist with the competition.
“Our numbers have just exploded,” says Challenge director Randy Rodgers. “The fact that we don’t charge much compared to some other similar events, enables players from all over the state to compete under the same conditions. Competition is held in punting, kickoffs, field goals, and deep snapping with each contestant completing a preliminary round of kicks or snaps and then the top eight advancing to the finals for head to head tournament competition. Kickoff and Field Goal competition are held on Friday and Punting and Snapping on Saturday morning.
“Since this event is outside the college evaluation window,” says Rodgers, “We send our results to programs all over the country. We’ve been really pleased with the number of outstanding players that have competed in the last seven years
