The tenth annual Lone Star Kicking Challenge, the premier competition event for Texas high school kickers returns to Austin this summer For the second year in a row, the competition will be held at Westlake High School on Friday, July 9 & Saturday July 10.
The popular competition event, founded and directed by former University of Texas Kicking Coach Randy Rodgers, has attracted over 1100 high school kickers/punters, and snappers over it first eight years. The alumni list includes Super Bowl Kicker Garrett Hartley (Oklahoma) of the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packer kicker Mason Crosby (Colorado), and current college kickers like Ryan Doerr (Kansas State), Justin Tucker (Texas), and Adi Kunalic (Nebraska). In addition, the LSKC is bolstered by appearance of Jeff Rodgers, Special Teams Coordinator for the Carolina Panthers.
“Our numbers have just exploded,” says Challenge director Randy Rodgers. “The fact that we don’t charge much, compared to some other similar events, enables players from all over the state to compete under the same conditions.” Competition is held in punting, kickoffs, field goals, and deep snapping with each contestant completing a preliminary round of kicks or snaps and then the top eight advancing to the finals for head to head tournament competition. Kickoff and Field Goal competition are held on Friday and Punting and Snapping on Saturday morning.
“Since this event is outside the college evaluation window, college coaches can’t attend,” says Rodgers, “We send our results to programs all over the country. We’ve been really pleased with the number of outstanding players that have competed in the last nine years.”
