Story: LONE STAR KICKING CHALLENGE ON FRIDAY

Top Kicking Specialist in Texas to Compete

The 8th annual Lone Star Kicking Challenge kicks off in San Marcos on Friday at Bobcat Stadium on the campus of Texas State University. A near record turnout of kickers, punters, and snappers is expected over the two day event. As of Thursday, 155 participants had pre-registered, challenging the record-setting 162 who participated in the 2005 event at Texas A&M.
According to Lone Star Kicking Challenge creator, Randy Rodgers, the increase is due to “terrific support from high school coaches in Texas, who have encouraged their ‘4th Down Specialists’ to participate”. Coach Rodgers is particularly excited about the number of snappers entered, almost double the number from last year. With no rain in the forecast, more players might register late.
Registration begins at 7:45 am on Friday with the Kickoff and Field Goal competition on Friday. Snappers and Punters will register at 7:45 on Saturday. Anyone not pre-registered may still compete, but needs to fill out the Registration form and Liability Waiver form on the Forms page of this website. Cost is $30 for one event and $50 for two or more.
Medals are awarded to the top three finishers in each event, as well as the top three Overall finishers, who compete in all three kicking event. The previous two Overall Winners have used the Lone Star Kicking Challenge as a springboard to a Division I scholarship. Jonathan Lacour of Kingwood is the only two-time Overall winner. Lacour, who won in 2005 and 2006 is now the starting punter for Texas Tech and last year’s winner, Ryan Doerr of Katy received a scholarship to the University of South Carolina.
